Trichotillomania Medication Options

Looking for a new medication to combat you or a loved one’s OCD or Trichotilomania?

Under the My Trichotillomania Story page, I have the medications that I have personally tried to combat ‘trich’ with as well as the ones I’m currently taking now. Here is a larger list of medications available that have been recognized as potentially helpful according to the website http://www.trich.org (Trichotillomania Learning Center or TLC):

SSRI’s: These drugs are known to help treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Depression.

  • Prozac
  • Luvox
  • Zoloft
  • Celexa
  • Lexapro
  • Paxil

Other Anti-Depressants

  • Elavil
  • Tofranil
  • Effexor
  • Sinequan

Neuroleptics: A common side affect to these medications is tremors. I take the drug Propranolol to assist in combating my shakiness.

  • Abilify
  • Seroquel
  • Geodon
  • Zyprexa
  • Risperdal

Clomipramine (Anafranil)

Naltrexone (Revia): This medication has been used before in one study (regarding trich). This med is primarily used for alcohol and drug addictions, therefore assisting the brain in conquering overloaded pleasure centers.

Lithium: This drug has been used primarily to treat bipolar disorder.

Other Agents
